Test Drive in My Closet-Cropped Pants

Typically, I go with a longer leg on most of the pants I wear because this creates the illusion of lengthier limbs, which I desperately need. But I've been wanting something new and thanks to J. Crew, I've recently become obsessed with cropped pants.

(Photo from jcrew.com)
I am especially drawn to the Minnie cropped pant in a stretch twill...(preppy, don't you think?)

But could a person of my abbreviated stature pull off a cropped pair? Well, since I'm not yet convinced, I'm not willing to invest $79.50 on something I'm so dubious of. Time for an experiment! I pulled out an old pair of black Esprit boot cut pants that I hadn't worn in at least 4 years and alterations ensued.

After narrowing the ankle, I shortened it to the same 24" inseam as a J Crew petite and in comparison to the Minnie, it looks as though I could have gone at least an inch or 2 shorter. (Sigh.) BUT, I'm not entirely unhappy with how they look. Dressier than the legging, but not as corporate as a pant, cute with flats and heels, I guess I'm sort of into it.

Thoughts? Should I make the investment? Or is this as bad as a capri?
J.

The photo's a little dark, but I actually like the pants. I'd just wear those! To hell with spending $80 on the same thing you just made.

I think it's a cute look, but I'm sure you can find something more affordable somewhere :) Love the way you did the look with your Esprit pants though!

Honestly, I really like the look. There's something very ambrosial about a cropped look. But...I wouldn't spend $80 for it. Perhaps you can find a more affordable pair elsewhere? Also, the way you've modified your Espprit pair is perfection!! :)

I personally think that you should'nt spend ur money on pants dat u.d already re-created they actually look fine as is already. On another note have u ever tried cuffing the bottom of ur pants?

* P.S- to answer ur question abt. the sneakers, I think that girls(after High school) should only wear running sneakers like the air max, Nike Lunars...etc or Spring skippys such as vans keds & such, but as far as basketball sneakers are conseren I think that only Nike air Retro* Jordans should be worm on females anything else *shakes head* should just be left to us dudes. 8-)

i think the length looks really cute! you can definitely pull it off, and i think it's more classic than capris (reminds me of audrey hepburn). ~joelle

I usually don't like crop pants, but I think they look great on you. If you like them, get them, don't worry about them 'not suiting your body type' perfectly !! :D

I made a goal this summer to not wear cropped pants unless I wear at least three inch heels. I am so short!

PS... a lemon shake sounds amazingly refreshing right about now.

hmmmm I'm not sold. I am the same and it drives me mad trying to get the lastest trouser/jean look. I think crop jean turn up's cira 1950 are fab but with trouser's I think hmmm.... I think a peg leg crop looks great because your eye is draw to the detail at the top. I have to say, why splash out that amount of money when your DIY's are pretty cute. Treat your self to something else instead. xxxxxx

i'm liking the cropped pant look but i don't think it's necessary to splurge on the j.crew pair! there's always less expensive alternatives.

First of all, your top is HOT. Secondly, yes, the pants look great. Good thinking pairing them with heels. :)

i love them! i just picked up some cropped pants...well, i think only 1 pair was *intended* to be cropped, but that's just how they both fit. in any case, i love them for spring!

I'm not quite into it... I don't know there's just something that doesn't feel right about it...

Just try my shopping MO, I sleep it over for a couple of days, then I look at the piece again. If I still think it's pretty and I wanna buy it, I'll make a purchase. If the feeling has faded away. Then my money goes for something more lovely :p

Hope it helped darling!

Nice job on the dress. I alter nearly everything -- nothing wrong with that!

I love the J. Crew Minnie's! I own two pairs and wear them a lot (I've worn them a few times in my lookbooks) I'm only 5'2" so it works on both tall and short girls!

These pants look perfect. I think you did a great job replicating the Minnie pant. Great work! You are so talented =)
